Western has been making lively things happen in Foggy Bottom since 1848.
Western is known both for its commitment to social justice and its everyday concern for the birth, life, and death of each individual member. In the heart of the nation's capital, Western nurtures the arts after school among children enrolled at a public elementary school, ministers to college students grappling with faith issues, welcomes families with children, supports senior citizens residing in retirement at an assisted-living facility, and feeds homeless people every day.
Globally, Western fosters the expansion of a protestant congregation in rural Ghana, protestant seminaries in China and Colombia, and AIDS relief in Thailand and Zaire.
Our congregation here at Western includes musical composers, university professors, scientists, government officers, and working members of the national media. Our pastors hold doctorates but are always looking for ways to involve in the nation's flow of benefits those who are left out of the decision-making processes.
Our immediate neighbors are the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, George Washington University, the U.S. State Department, and the Watergate Complex. Housed in a new building that won a national award from the American Institute of Architects, Western is small and dynamic, urban and inclusive, historic and growing.
Come join us as we engage with the world and the life of the spirit!
