Volunteering

To participate in or learn more about any of these volunteer activities, email Western's office or call 202/835.8383. A volunteer coordinator will contact you.

Miriam's Kitchen — Western volunteers help prepare and serve breakfast at Miriam's Kitchen on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Other volunteers assist the social service staff in working with the guests. Western members also maintain an herb garden for Miriam's in the church courtyard.

Calvary Women's Shelter — Western volunteers prepare and serve dinner for approximately 25 women on the 3rd Saturday each month.

Capital Area Food Bank — Western volunteers work at the Food Bank (sorting donated food, preparing food bags for seniors, etc.) from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the 2nd Saturday of each month.

Foggy Bottom Farmers Market — Western volunteers glean at the market each Wednesday evening about 7:00 p.m. as the market closes. The farmers are very generous in donating fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat, and flowers for the use of Miriam's Kitchen. The market season runs from April into November.

Each fall, Westerners participate in the AIDS Walk (to benefit Whitman-Walker Clinic), the Walk for Literacy (to benefit various literacy organizations in the D.C. area), and the Homeless Walkathon (supporting many organizations that assist the homeless, including Miriam's Kitchen and Calvary Women's Services).

Western encourages members and friends to assist with the post-Hurricane Katrina recovery effort. Members have gone to the Gulf to work with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, often participating on teams organized by Vienna Presbyterian Church. To make participation possible for as many people as possible, Western offers to pay some of the costs.

Western encourages members to participate in environmental projects, such as cleanup outings and tree planting. The Mission Committee will announce activities to the congregation each year as they are planned.
